So, you've decided on your goals for the new year. What now? How can you give yourself the best chance of achieving them?

Here are 5 tips to help you start on track, and stay that way!

1. Write out your plan

It might seem obvious, but actually sitting down and writing out your goals is the first major step towards achieving them. The laws of attraction suggest that you need to ask the universe for what you want. We also know that our brains are mighty powerful tools – so let’s give them a roadmap to work on. Of course, you’ll need to make sure that the goals you set down are achievable – there’s nothing more demoralising than falling at the first hurdle. Start by writing down everything you’d like to achieve for the year and then categorise them into immediate, short and longer term goals. Assign each one a rough timeframe and where possible, incorporate them into your daily planning – your planner or diary, your calendar, reminders on your phone etc. If some of your goals involve other people, let them know about your plans – they will help to hold you accountable. Try pinning your broader goals somewhere you can see them – reaffirming them first thing in the morning is a great start!

2. Build some balance into your action plan

It’s tempting to launch yourself at your new goals with all your new energy and enthusiasm. But remember that you’ll need to build some balance into your plan in order to make your stamina last. The classic example is the strict diet some of choose to begin, which then becomes just too difficult and restrictive to continue. No matter what your goals are, build in some balance by setting down regular time for exercise, hobbies, “switch-off” time, and mini breaks. This will give you the time to regroup, re-energise and to pick up again with your sword swinging.

3. Recognise where you might need help and plan for it

We don’t live in isolation and working towards your goals will often mean that you’ll need support from those around you. This might be as simple as calling in babysitting favours, or asking friends to help you get out of a rut. You might also be looking to confront deeper issues that are holding you back, so reach out for professional help when you need it – your mental health is worth it.

 4. Clean up and out

Take this opportunity to look at what’s essential in your life and what might be getting in the way of you achieving your goals. What can be cleaned up, better organised or even passed on to others? A large scale clean up of your home or office is cleansing in so many ways. If you don’t have any blocks of time to set aside for this, consider what you could achieve in much smaller blocks, and write these into your planning system. You’ll be pleased with the mental clarity this gives you and the space to focus on your higher goals.

 5. Celebrate the small wins

Make sure that you stop and appreciate any positive progress, no matter how small. Tell others how well you have done. Reward yourself when you reach certain milestones. If you do fall off the wagon, or fall behind in your rough time schedules, shake yourself off and keep going. Be proud that you are someone who can tackle the same hurdle twice. After all, every day is a fresh page and an opportunity to start anew.
